The long-awaited on-screen reunion of K-drama superstars Kim Woo-bin and Suzy is set for this fall in a new fantasy romantic comedy for Netflix, “Genie, Make a Wish.” Scheduled to premiere on October 3, the series brings the beloved actors together for the first time since their popular 2016 drama, “Uncontrollably Fond.”
Penned by acclaimed writer Kim Eun-sook, known for the hit series “The Glory,” the show offers a dark and comedic twist on the classic genie-in-a-lamp narrative.
A High-Stakes Bet Between Satan and a Psychopath
The story introduces Genie (Kim Woo-bin), a powerful, wish-granting entity who has been confined to a lamp for a millennium. However, this is no ordinary genie—he is secretly Satan, determined to prove the inherent corruptibility of humankind.
His mission takes an unexpected turn when he is summoned by Ka-young (Suzy), a young woman who is emotionally detached and has been raised to suppress her psychopathic tendencies. Genie offers her three wishes, fully expecting her to use them for selfish purposes.
Instead of falling for his temptations, the impassive Ka-young challenges his entire worldview. She proposes a “best-of-five” bet to determine the true nature of humanity. If Genie wins, she will not only use all her wishes but will also forfeit her life. If she wins, the powerful lamp becomes hers. This wager initiates an extraordinary and perilous relationship, with the trailer teasing a romance that blossoms amidst hurled insults and life-threatening confrontations, including passionate kisses and a waltz through time and space.
An All-Star Supporting Cast
The series boasts a stellar ensemble cast to support its compelling leads:
- Ahn Eun-jin, from “Hospital Playlist,” plays Mi-joo, a mysterious woman with a distinct retro style.
- Noh Sang-hyun of “Pachinko” fame appears as Soo-hyun, Genie’s brother and rival, also known as the “Angel of Death.”
- Ko Kyu-pil, known for his role in “The Roundup: No Way Out,” portrays Genie’s assistant, a jaguar spirit living in human form.
- Lee Joo-young from “The 8 Show” plays Min-ji, Ka-young’s sole friend.
Set to premiere just in time for the Korean Chuseok holiday, “Genie, Make a Wish” is being promoted as a visually stunning and stress-free romantic comedy that promises to captivate audiences with its unique and engaging storyline.
